| BPTC retains AFTERSHOCK 2010 Challenge Cup The BPTC Saturday Team boarded a double-decker bus at 10:00am on Sunday morning (April 17th) and headed off to Kaiapoi Tennis Club to defend the AFTERSHOCK 2010 Challenge Trophy, which they had won inaugurally the previous year. Although bad weather was predicted, it did not arrive until late in the afternoon, necessitating the termination of only three matches (in progress). The result was however confirmed and BPTC retained the trophy. We look forward to the impending rematch. |

This year's BPTC Annual Seniors Tournament was a great success despite marginal weather conditions early on day two - which eventually cleared. Organiser David Howarth confidently waited for that break ! David would like to thank ALL his helpers and amazing sponsors, and of course everyone who came along and took part, in Burnside's annual flagship Senior Tournament. BPTC had made a decision to donate 50% of the profits from this tournament to Christchurch Earthquake relief, and David has now announced that as a result of that decision, $1,300.00 will be donated to the Red Cross quake fund. |
|
| The success of this tournament is hugely dependant on contributions from a raft of voluntary helpers who form the Tournament Committee. David thanks Lisa, Rhonda, Sue Gibson, Carol, Juliet, Gary, Tony, Stephanie and Geoff for all of their efforts. Click here to go to the BPTC results page for official results of this tournament | ||

BPTC's Chanistha (CT) Ampornachariya wins Tennis NZ Junior Masters Top 8 The Tennis New Zealand Junior Masters Top 8 tournament 2010 in Auckland was played recently. Megan Rogers didn't drop a set on her way to two wins on day one in Group A of the 12u Girls, while in Group B, BPTC's Chanistha (CT) Ampornachariya lead the group, the second seed coming out on top in her clash with third seeded Northerner Sarah Wardenburg. The top seed in the 12u Girls was also made to work for her place in the final. Megan Rogers (Northern) was taken to three sets by fellow Northener Sarah Wardenburg, but came out with the win 6-3 6-7 6-1, on her way to a face-off with BPTC's Chanistha (CT) Ampornachariya in the final, after CT eased past Michal Matson, also of Canterbury in the other semi. CT then upset upset top seed Megan Rogers of Northern to take the 12u girls title. Our BPTC Star took the match in straight sets 6-3 6-4, and for her efforts CT got the 12u Winner Trophy, NZ $750.00, a Tournament T-Shirt and a can of Slazenger tennis balls. CT also had her first chance to be selected to representative New Zealand Tennis 12u Team to Australia tour between 6-20 December 2010, but Tennis NZ could not select her because she currently doesn’t have a New Zealand passport. Her father Charles tells us she will be getting her New Zealand passport after 18th January, 2011. |

At BPTC we have a brand new main gate, and it has a digital lock .... That means that you need to know the combination to get into the complex. An e-Mail was sent to all members on Wednesday, December 15th, advising the combination. Please do not pass this on to non-members. Financial Members of BPTC are easily identified by their shoe tag. Now that the complex is secure, there is no reason for non-members to be inside, unless they have paid the appropriate court fees, and are properly attired. Next Season a new security system will be in place with each member having an access tag. |

| Welcome to Shape Technology — BPTC's newest sponsor !! | ||||
| Shape Technology boosts it's productivity by the employment of robots and robotics | ||||
![]() |
His company boosts productivity through a focus on technology, and in particular, robotics. Shape Technology managing director. Hans Schuitman says people, and his employees, have nothing to fear from colleagues that are cast rather than hired. In his own business the introduction of robotics has increased pinductivity by 80 per cent in the past 12 months, and rather than replacing his human employees, this rise - thanks to robots - has led to a 15 per cent increase in his 50-strong work force. Shape Technology is a flagship company for the Schuitman Group. It designs and manufactures technology components and products for the electronic industry, and has a range of technology-based products such as touch screen kiosks that are marketed globally. It's come a long way from its humble beginnings 14 years ago, but Schuitman is giving nothing away when it comes to turnover, only remarking that it's going very well. "lt could be a $100 million business, if we emp1oyed a full-time prototype maker," he says. He has plans to install a further four robots in the next few months and has spent about $4m on plant in the past two months to ensure he keeps | |||
| Shape's growth ticking along. Others could alsostand to profit from his company's innovations, he says, building prouctivity through technology and creating real wea1th, and not just for bosses like him. But it's not about the money, Schuitman says. He is passionate about productivity and producing wealth for all - and making New Zealand just a little better, he says. All this from an immigrant kid with poor English who at 14 decided to pit his wits against the "school of life". "I've always enjoyed doing things differently," he explains, "only dead fish swin with the tide" ....... Why did you become an enterpreneur? To me, an entrepreneur is someone who makes a difference and reshapes our world to make it better for all and who creates and provides real wealth for others. One does not become an entrepreneur, you are simply made that way from birth. What have been the biggest obstacles in running your company? Starting from scratch with no capital and having an untamed passion to make a difference but with initially no clarity on direction. Name one thing that you've learnt while in the business and from who? Direct your focus on outcome and manage the obstacles, after all there is no limit as to what we can do and achieve - just don't waiver. My mentors are Sir Robertson Stewart and Sir Angus Tait. What are your business and personal goals? Business - to make New Zealand a better and sounder place through my efforts and visions. Personal - never to lose touch with reality. Do you have any tips for budding entrepreneurs? Put your efforts into real things, not speculative objectives; ensure that your dream is do-able; always pay your debts; take others along on your journey but never stop dreaming; and never let the small boy or girl within you die. ![]() Thankful: Accident victim Gracie Nichols, left, and her twin Annie, have raised $7,000.00 for St John Ambulance and Christchurch Hospital's intensive care department. |
||
| Crash victim gives back to saviours (Article written by Beck Eleven) One second was all it took for Gracie Nichols to clip the back wheel of her father's bicycle and disappear under a car. The 17-year-old, who had never broken a bone, was run over from her left hip to her right shoulder after falling from her bike on Halswell Road in Christchurch. She suffered almost 30 broken bones and her punctured lungs filled with fluid. With the help of bystanders, her father managed to lift the car for long enough to free her. It is almost two years since that fateful second, however, the accident spurred Gracie and her twin, Annie, to promote the "1 bike, 1 car, 1 second" campaign to raise money for St John and Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) staff. Gracie Nichols remembers little of St ]ohn's or ICU's involvement, where she lay in an induced coma for four days. She was in hospital for three weeks, but her recovery took almost a year. During the hospital stay, Annie helped her sister prioritise things to do on her release. Top of the list was "eat bacon and eggs". However, they also decided to repay St John and lCU staff with a campaign reminding people to take an extra second on the roads. "You feel euphoric after something like that (surviving the accident), like there are no limitations, so we thought we might as well make the most of it," Gracie Nichols said. "Annie says St John saved my life and ICU kept me alive." l'm not blaming cars or wanting to fuel any argument about cars versus bikes. "It was an unlucky event, but I was incredibly lucky". "A second glance can save." The sisters have been selling bumper stickers for a gold coin donation and have raised $7,000 towards their $10,000 goal. David Thomas, a South Island general manager for St John, said the charity organisation relied on the generosity of people like the Nichols family. The stickers are available from Fendalton New World, selected Christchurch bicycle stores or by visiting www.cyclesafer.co.nz *** This article was published in THE PRESS, Christchurch on June 23rd, 2010 The Nichols are telling their story for the "Flash a Light" St John Appeal week (June 20-26) www.stjohn.org.nz |

Sir Richard Hadlee is without any doubt at all, Canterbury's most famous sporting personality, and he has lived in close proximity to the Club for many years. It is with much pleasure that we announce that Sir Richard has agreed to be our Club Patron. Our President, John Campbell has had a long association with Sir Richard (having been a member of the Richard Hadlee Testimonial Committee, and for the past 18 years the Chairman of The Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust - which has responsibility for the organisation of the annual Canterbury Sportsperson Of The Year Awards). We take this opportunity to welcome Sir Richard to our Club in his new role, and we look forward to a long association with him as the years roll on .......... |

Thanks to a great little idea from Robyn Clark ........ ........ this hi-tech, space-age device has been installed on the grass adjacent to Court 4. EVERYONE should remove the sand from their shoes when returning to the Clubhouse area after play on the AstroTurf Courts (4, 5, 6 and 7). Sand is alien to the surfaces of Courts 1, 2 and 3 — and a lot of effort (mostly centered around constant sweeping) is required to minimise playing danger/damage. Members are requested to give this initiative full support ! This device being of such a complicated nature – a users manual may necessarily materialise shortly ! |

Join our effort to secure a Ball Machine The Club Grants Coordinator recently applied for funding to purchase a new Ball Machine, but unfortunately was unsuccessful on this occasion. Your Management Committee has decided that provision of a Ball Machine for Club Player Development is a priority - accordingly a Fundraiser has been initiated to raise the necessary funds to buy the Ball Machine as soon as possible. The target amount concerned is $5,500.00 ..... ..... and the Committee feels that this is achievable with suitable membership support and fundraising activities within the Club — and applying to potential donors. |

The match was played on a glorious day, and was a fitting end to a great day's tennis by the winning pair. This is the second title Lolita and Frank have won this season - they were triumphant in the earlier Joan Thompson Handicap Doubles event, having defeated Sue Gibson and David Howarth. The Bert Hearne Plate for first round losers from the Joan Thompson Handicap Doubles was won by Lucille Ibbitt and John Lamb, who defeated Rhonda Ding and Michael Ellis.
