| The 86th Annual General Meeting of The Burnside Park Tennis Club, Inc. was held in the Club's Pavilion, Burnside Park, on Saturday July 23rd, 2011 at 3:00pm. |
||
On a pleasant afternoon, with a large group of players out on the courts, the scene was set for a well-attended AGM. Club President John Campbell opened the meeting at the appointed time, welcomed Life Members, visitors and rank-and-file members of the Club, who attended in excellent numbers. John briefly covered the Club's activities over the past year, and drew the meeting's attention the lack of a Junior Report in the documentation which was sent out to members prior to the AGM in accordance with the Club's rules. He thanked the large number of Members who had provided their time and services to the Club, and pointed out that the willingness of such Members to be involved in the day-to-day activities was crucial to it's on-going success. John welcomed the incoming Committee, thanking those who had been re-elected and welcomed Anna Gell. Bruce McDowell was made a Life Member of the Club, and John acquainted the meeting with Bruce's great record of service to the Club over many years. Barry Leung (who wasn't at the meeting) was announced as the "Most Improved Player" for 2010/2011. |

Welcome: Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to the 86th Annual General Meeting of The Burnside Park Tennis Club, and a particularly warm welcome to those Life Members who are with us today. We lost a former President and Life Member of the Club earlier this month – AFR (or Arthur) Adams - and the Club has sent it’s condolences to his family. Our thanks to David Howarth for representing the Club at Arthur’s funeral. His loss will be offset with a new Life Member on the recommendation of the Management Committee. This will come up under General Business later on in the meeting. I hope you will join with me in acknowledging this member’s great contribution to our Club over many years, and in many different ways. I hope that you've all had a chance to read through the various reports which have been circulated in accordance with our obligations under our rules. You will have noticed that the original documents which were e-Mailed and published on the web (and also mailed to Life and Social Members, and those who are unfortunate not to own a computer) - did not include any Junior Report. This was because the report was received after the deadline for the documents to be distributed to members within 7 clear days of this AGM, and therefore could not be included. The Junior Report has now been included in all the AGM printed material, and is on the downloads page on the Club’s website. I don’t intend to speak to any of the reports at this particular moment, but they will all be opened for discussion at the end of my address. It would be remiss of me not to mention the earthquakes with have beset us over this past year, and I would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation in allowing those less fortunate than ourselves to come along and utilise our relatively unscathed facilities whilst their own are devastated and unusable. This has of course placed a considerable burden on our court availability, but we have been able to manage this satisfactorily with everyone’s co-operation. We have this past year implemented a security system on our perimeter with the installation of a new steel gate and digital lock. At the end of the month this will be replaced by a KeyCard coded lock. There have already been benefits from the installation of security with court fees increasing significantly. Only those who wish to play outside organised playing hours will need a card and so there will be little or no impact on those who regularly attend organised play. The Club is making these cards available at cost price, plus an annual nominal coding charge. Ben will be giving you full details when he speaks to the annual subscriptions. I’m not going to mention individual names today, but I would like to thank EVERYONE who has contributed time or assisted the Club in any way this past year. There’s always a lot to do around this place, and without a strong Committee and committed members the job would be nigh on impossible, so thanks. Congratulations to Lisa on becoming our new Club Administrator. We have a great Committee with a huge depth of experience to serve the Club this year, and we’re all looking forward to doing so. If there’s anything at all that you think needs attention around the Club over the next 12 months, please make contact with one of our Committee Members and we will do our best to address any issues at the subsequent Committee meeting. Please use our website as much as possible. We try to keep it fully up to date with details of what’s going on. It has all the Club rosters, as well as a Dynamic Information Page to conveniently advise members of cancellations etc. immediately that information is available – in fact every item posted by the Club to the Information Page is on YOUR screen within 30 seconds of it having been sent to the web. Please keep an eye out for social and special events (all of which will be posted on the News page on the web). And now as we move on to the business of the day, I thank you all for coming to this 86th AGM of the Club, and I hope you will enjoy the meeting. Thankyou. President's Written Report: It is my pleasure to present my report to the 86th Annual General Meeting of the Club. This past year has been a particularly challenging one for the Club with the effects of the devastating earthquakes which have consumed our lives for the past 10 months wreaking havoc through the tennis fraternity, as they have across all sporting codes in our city. Because we have been lucky in not having been seriously compromised by the earthquakes, we have been able to extend the hand of friendship to those who have been badly effected, and of course this has placed an unprecedented amount of pressure on our facilities. I’m very pleased to say that by and large, members have happily shared with those who have come to play at our Club during organised sessions, and Gareth being aware of Remi Feneon’s predicament, very caringly proposed that we perhaps allow Remi to coach at our Club in the interim. Both these situations, plus new regular groups of users, have of course seen court-time rise to a premium with the added demand. My thanks to everyone who has made concessions to allow the Club to accommodate all this extra activity. Although earthquake damage has been minimal to BPTC’s facilities, we have not escaped totally unscathed, and indeed we have a claim in with our insurers presently for repairs to several courts. These repairs, along with remedial work to the fences, will continue to be, (as they have been recently), monitored relative to the seismic activity we are continuing to experience, and we will only invoke repairs when indications are that we have come through the events to the fullest extent. Obviously this is not an exact science, and so we are likely to be in a holding pattern for some time as clarity starts to emerge around us. Canterbury Tennis unilaterally called the 2010/2011 InterClub Competition off, and this has left the whole season totally unresolved, with no possibility of any awards being handed out. Once again the Club's Management Team has been forced to devote a huge amount of time and effort toward our Juniors, and the Junior Action Committee initiative announced at last year’s AGM, has proven to have been unsuccessful for a number of reasons - not the least of which being that there is a sentiment within the Junior ranks that Juniors and Junior Parents do not want to be involved in routine fundraising activities. With external grants becoming harder and harder to obtain, it once again places the burden on the Senior Club to directly fund Junior activities. Last year, a new structure was put in place to subsidise Junior Coaching, and funds (grants) previously received were ring-fenced into a "Junior Development Fund". This fund provided last season's coaching subsidies, but was supposed to have been topped-up from Junior Fund-raising activities over the year. The JDF has sufficient resource to do the same again this season, however, if there is no increase in Junior fundraising activities and initiatives over the next 12 months, the Club will be faced next season with a demand to once again use Senior subscriptions to fund Junior development – assuming no significant external funding is forthcoming. The disfunctional nature of the past season's Junior Action Group is adequately demonstrated by the lateness of the report to this AGM. We anticipate a much better performance from the new group this season. Our membership numbers have substantially stagnated in both Seniors and Juniors, and we have been very fortunate to be able to hold this year's subscriptions at last year's levels, due to the Club's financial position, fund-raising, grant initiatives and charitable receipts. The security lock on the main gate has seen a significant increase in the amount of court fees we are collecting, and in the new season we are moving to a coded-tab access system. Only those members who are desirous of accessing the complex outside regular organised playing hours will need to have a coded tab. The cost of a tab will be the lowest of any of our local sister organisations. I would like to thank all the members of the Management Team for their work, and similarly anyone who has worked for the Club over the past season in any way at all. I do not propose to attempt to thank everyone individually this year. The Senior and Junior Management and Administration of the Club this next season is being consolidated into one overall Club Administrator's role, to which former Club Comptroller, Lisa Barnes has been appointed. Our Junior Administrator for the past season, Angela Mitchell, has left us now, and we thank her for her good work with the Juniors, and wish her well in any new role she pursues. Thanks once more to Brett Thompson for auditing the Club's accounts, and to our honorary Solicitor Ben Frampton who has certainly earned his keep this year. I hope you all enjoyed last season, and we look forward to a much more orderly frame of activities within and around the Club, and a lot less extraneous pressures, as we move into the new season. |

SENIOR TENNIS: Gary Sherwood - Club Captain Burnside Park Tennis Club entered 10 teams in the 2010-11 Canterbury senior InterClub competition. Again this was the largest representation from any club in Canterbury. The Senior Men's team unfortunately had their top player, Glenn Wilson, sustain an injury during the first round and was unavailable for the rest of the season. They played eight times for two wins and six losses and finished at the bottom of the table. The Senior Women's team had a bad start, losing their first two matches but then won seven of the next eight matches to finish in second place at the end of round-robin play, just one point behind Hagley Park. After winning their semi-final they played Hagley Park in the final and tied the matches 3-3 but lost on a set countback by 8-6. Even though they narrowly lost it was a great season for the ladies, exceeding all expectations. Our top player, Joelene Feneon, dominated the competition, winning all her singles matches and losing only one doubles match. The damage to Wilding Park and other clubs prevented the completion of the rest of the InterClub grades and thus it was decided that no winners would be declared in those grades. Several BPTC teams had been performing well and would have likely made the finals. The Division 1 and 2 Men's team were both second after round-robin play, as was the top Division 1 Women's team. Handicap doubles tournaments were held in May 2011 for regular Saturday social players. The Men's Doubles was won by Bruce McDowell and Kaniappa Reddy. The Ladies Doubles was won by Lucille Ibbitt and Sue Gibson. The Mixed Doubles was won by Brent and Janette Winks. Congratulations to the winners and better luck next year to the others. Also introduced this season was a computerised method for making up doubles matches for Saturday social players. This "Double Happy" software can potentially give players more variation in their opposition, stopping people complaining that they are playing against the same people all the time. Use of it is voluntary at the moment and hopefully will be used more once people realise its usefulness. OPEN SENIORS TOURNAMENT: David Howarth - Convenor The decision to run our Tournament after the devastating earthquake of the 22 February proved to be a positive decision as those who took part enjoyed some competitive tennis and a good social occasion. We had 90 entries over the two days, a slight increase on 2010 (the figures for the 2010 Tournament are shown in brackets) ..... Entries: Saturday 58 (52) Sunday 32 (28) Total 90 (80) Entry Fees: $2,075.00 ($1,860.00) Kitchen Profit: $315.00 ($291.00) Bar Profit: $355.00 ($261.00) Raffles: $232.00 ($218.00) Tournament Profit: $2,620.00 ($2,111.00) The Club made a decision to make a donation from the proceeds of this Tournament to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal and we were able to donate $1,300.00 to the Red Cross Earthquake Appeal We received many positive comments from the visiting competitors about the environment, the courts, the quality of the food, the prizes and the overall organisation of the Tournament. I would like to thank the Tournament committee members (Lisa Barnes, Rhonda Ding, Sue Gibson, Carol Manihera, Juliet Manson, Gary Sherwood, Tony Simons, Stephanie Wild) and Geoff Holgate (bar organisation) for their efforts over a number of weeks. The financial success of the Tournament is reliant on the support of many sponsors who were given good exposure at the Tournament. The success also depends on support from many Club members and I thank them for their time, effort, contribution of goods and prizes and for taking part in the event. SATURDAY TENNIS: Hugh Webber - Saturday Captain Again there has been a strong turn-out this season even on some cold days, with near maximum court utilisation on several days. The weather has been good to us and I think we have only cancelled one or two Saturdays due to overpowering rain. I have tried to make the mid-session talk a focus for information and any issues and apologise for the jokes that didn't make it and those which went over the head - like the reference to some in the crowd at Wimbledon calling out "Come on Tim!" when Andy Murray was playing and losing. Ouch! Saturday duty is something that comes around for everyone, once in a while, and to all who have answered the call and come down to the Club and done their "day on the board", my sincere thanks for a job well done. The "Double Happy" software package from Top-Spin Systems, has not yet made it into normal use, we need to have some training, and some people have pointed out issues which they think need fine tuning such as when it produces doubles with no reference to gender make-up with strange results and I think someone had an issue that it can team up the same two people several times in a row. Hopefully as more people are trained and some fine tuning made this software will mean that a "day on the board" is no longer a "day of no tennis" for the person on duty, as the computer can order the rounds in a very short time, obviating the need for writing down rounds, and fielding complaints from those who have felt they haven't had the games they deserve. I would also like to draw attention to the fine fellowship to be had après match upstairs in the clubrooms with fine wines, fine beers, nibbles, sometimes a music video and entertaining company and discussions. We have had numbers into the mid teens at this function and it would be great to see even more of you in attendance in the future! MID-WEEK TENNIS: Colene Vincent - Mid-Week Convenor The Mid-Week season opened on Thursday 2nd September and was followed with morning tea when some social members also joining us. In the early hours of the 4th of September we were jolted by the first of many earthquakes to strike our province and Christchurch and the surrounding areas was changed for ever. We were very lucky to be in this area of the City, most of our homes received minimal damage. Unlike a lot of Clubs in Canterbury were able to return to our courts with little damage but this season was like no other and we hope never to go through another one like it. We were saddened in late to July to learn of the death of Dick Richardson, a sad time for Jan, but as ever the members are of support to her. Our very weather disrupted winter Frontrunner Bush Inn A Grade Competition ended on the 30th August after only 6 rounds were completed. Avonhead were the winners with Burnside Park runners up. Mid-Week Summer InterClub started on 1st September. We fielded one team again but we had a very disrupted season, and only played 19 of the scheduled 28 matches for 11wins and 8 losses. The members who take part really enjoy the matches and hopefully for the coming season, if the opposition courts are not available we will play both rounds at Burnside Park. Joan Thompson Handicap Doubles were played in October. Winners: Mary Claridge and Frank Vatananan. Runners up: Sue Gibson and Brian Harris. The Bert Hearne Plate was played for by the first round losers. Results: Winners: Marianne Calder and Brett Thompson. Runners-up: Sue Sullivan and John Lamb. This is a popular event with good entries. Ray Allison Mixed Doubles were played in November. Results: Winners: Diane Greenfield and John Campbell. Runners up: Rhonda Ding and Frank Vatananan. The Ladies and Men's Doubles were not played as weather affected both dates set aside for play. A fun Yankee Tournament, where cards were cut to plus or minus points, was played in April prior to Easter with morning tea with Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs as prizes. A very enjoyable morning. Christmas lunch was held on the 16th December following play and our social members joined with us. Peter Rowe organised our traditional choir and they were accompanied by John Campbell on guitar. Father Christmas, with Mother Christmas, and Rudolph distributed presents we had brought along. Trophies were presented and John Edginton was able to take our usual food donation to the City Mission. Thursday 15th April we shared a very happy occasion after the morning's tennis to help Gordon Armstrong celebrate his 80th Birthday. It was a great tribute to Gordon to see so many present and social mid week members come along and enjoy the gathering and fine food, supplied in the main by Marie with extra plates from players. Hopefully Gordon will be at the Club for many more seasons 16th May saw the start of our 11th year of competition of the Frontrunner Bush Inn A Grade Winter Tennis Competition. We have 7 teams entered. The weather has been kinder so far with 2 rain affected to date and there is one game to play to complete the first round. We are again grateful for the Frontrunner Bush Inn‘s (Alistair Chapman) continuing support. At the end of May we had a most enjoyable morning tea after play to help Peter Rowe celebrate his 80th Birthday and we hope to see him enjoying his tennis with us for many more seasons to come. My thanks for the continuing support of the mid week members and a special mention to the sub-committee of Lucille Ibbitt, Rhonda Ding, Peter Rowe, Ray Fright, Judy Fitzgerald, Ellen Harris and Hamish Wilson who share with me in opening and organising the members on the roster. JUNIOR TENNIS: (1) Dave Adlam - Junior Action Committee (2) Angela Mitchell - Junior Administrator It was a season that promised a lot from the juniors and delivered great results albeit being interrupted by two earthquakes. With a premature ending of the season due to the Feb 22nd earthquake we had 13 junior teams in either 1st or 2nd place leading into the final few weeks and I am confident that many of those teams would have delivered trophies to the Club. We hosted the first of the junior winter league (post season) rounds for the Canterbury Tennis initiative to keep the juniors involved over winter to help make up for abrupt end to the season. BPTC hosted the 14's (Girls and Boys) round on the 8th May. We had 23 entries and it was a fun day with some great tennis being played. The winners for that round were Ed Stoica and Chanistha Ampornachariya (CT). I would like to thank Annabel Merrett for helping to run the day and also Gareth and Angela for the work setting this up. It has been a year of feeling our way with the Junior Committee and I know whoever takes this over next season will improve even further from this year. It is great to see that we have such brilliant coaches here at BPTC and this was shown with only a two-week break after Feb 22nd before they had the juniors out training and playing again at the club. This also shows when the kids turn up in all weather to get coaching lessons I am stepping aside from the committee so I would like to thank all those involved throughout the Juniors this year and also the great support I had from everyone in particular Matt Clark, Gareth Robb and Angela Mitchell. (Dave Adlam) The Junior Section of the Club continued to grow this season with slightly over 260 members on our database by the end of the season. The Primary schools programme which starts off in term 3 each year attracts many new beginner players to start their tennis journey here at Burnside. Opening Day: Saturday 28th August 2010. This saw the introduction of a new membership system for juniors and we produced a new membership form, which proved a success. For the 2010/2011 season, all junior members were deleted off the membership system as at 31/07/2010 and had to complete the new registration form to become members as at 01/08/2010, this enabled our database to be current from the new season and ensured up to date information was held and subscription payments were prompt Tournaments: The BPTC Christmas Open tournament was held on Sunday 28th November with 55 entries. This attracts players from all over the region competing in 9's, 10's 12's and 14's Club Singles Championships: Sunday 10th April. Winners were as follows: BOYS 9's Cameron Clark, 10's Andrew Sletcher, 12's Taylor Nelson, 12's (Div 2) Hamish Findlay, 14's Ed Stoica, 18's Benny Hwang GIRLS 9's Sophie White, 10's Ella Bampton, 13's Harriet Clyma, 14's Chanistha Ampornachariya, 18's Lauren Tyler-Harwood Congratulations to all winners! Saturday Beginner Tennis: Again I had the pleasure of meeting new players and parents this season who came to the Club for the first time. Session times were at 9am and 10am and each Saturday approx. 40 players attended in total with memberships and enquiries making it a very enjoyable part of my role. Many of these players since enrolled in our winter coaching squads for term 2. The Canterbury Tennis Schools programme is a major factor in these new memberships and Gareth and myself worked on the promotional aspect to invite many of these to visit Burnside and experience tennis. Interclub: 30 teams were entered and unfortunately due to the earthquakes the competition was cancelled short of the season. Our teams performed very well, final placings of note (as at February) were: BOYS 10's Div 1 1st, 10's Div 2 1st (newly promoted from 9's), 11's Div 2 2nd, 12's Div 3 1st and 2nd (2 teams), 14's Div 2 2nd, Challenger 2 2nd GIRLS 9's Div 1 2nd, 13's Div 2 1st, 14's Div 2 1st, Senior Satellite 1st, Challenger 1 1st, Challenger 2 1st I have been again fortunate to have had committed players, captains, supervisors and parents here at Burnside. It continues to impress me how they are loyal and self-manage their teams with pride. It was out of our control that we have not been able to finish the season which from the above results was very promising. Thank you all for making my job so much easier. At this time I make mention of Gareth Robb's dedication to our juniors and his valued assistance to my role as we have continued to work as a committed team over the season. We have shared a common goal to provide the best we can to Burnside juniors while making it fun also. My role has sadly finished due to job disestablishment. The past three years have been a thoroughly rewarding, exciting and successful tennis adventure growing Junior Tennis at Burnside Park Tennis Club. (Angela Mitchell) N.B. The Junior Report was received after the deadline for the distribution of AGM Notices (BPTC Rule 15A), but is now included in this complete version, for the sake of regularity and member convenience COACHING: Gareth Robb - Head Coach The 2010/11 season was a very interesting one and unfortunately it was briefly interrupted by the circumstances of the earthquakes. However, the Burnside Park Tennis Club coaching program was completed in full after a two week break after the February 22nd shake. The BPTC Junior and Senior teams on average were performing very well up until the disruption. So moving forward we hope the 2011/12 season will be an enjoyable one without any interruptions and that last season's cancellation of InterClub hasn't dampened the spirits of the young juniors of the Club. The InterClub team coaching was very close to uninterrupted throughout the season despite the earthquake. All 30 teams for 2010/11 had their allocated number of coaching sessions, although the InterClub coaching had a couple of weeks off due to the February earthquake but this was quickly made up by adding 2 weeks of coaching on towards the end of term to complete the predetermined 16 weeks of InterClub coaching. The Club then kindly recognised the cancellation of InterClub and came to the party by generously allocating some funding to give our junior members an extra 2 weeks coaching on top of that. Canterbury Tennis organised a number of winter league tournaments to help compensate for the loss of the last few weeks of InterClub. BPTC was extremely generous and offered their courts for a couple of these tournaments and they were well received by the keen tennis players I would like to thank the InterClub coaching team of Andy Palliser, James Paulik, Annabel Merrett, and Mattias Wieland for their fine efforts in their lessons during the season. The BPTC continues to lead the way with InterClub coaching where it prefers quality "Assistant Coach" qualified coaches and experience for InterClub coaching. I would also like to thank the Saturday morning beginner coaches of Richard Hornby, Adam Hornby, David Smith, and Todd Mitchell for their work teaching the beginner members the basics of tennis. Until the cancellation of senior InterClub our senior teams were sitting high on the Canterbury Tennis InterClub tables. Our senior women's team lead by Joelene Feneon was able to finish second where they lost the final by a set. Joelene led from the front winning all 10 of her singles matches. Joelene also went through winning 9 out of 10 of her doubles matches. These great results were extremely important getting the senior women's team on the front foot at the start of each fixture. So many thanks to Joelene and her team for their great efforts last season and her massive contribution to the BPTC senior women's team Andy Palliser had his Division One men's team sitting clear at the top of the table leading into the semi-finals before the earthquake caused the cancellation of InterClub. Annabel Merret also in the Division One grade, had her women's team sitting at the top of the table also before the InterClub cancellation. Mattias Wieland's Division Two team was sitting second on the table but had convincingly beaten the team at the top of the table during the season. What made this win even better was that it was an under strength team that day due to other commitments and it even had to default one of its singles matches during that fixture. So this team was sure to be confident leading into the business part of the season. STRATEGY and COMPLIANCE: Geoff Holgate – Strategy and Compliance The Strategy and Compliance sub-committee (Geoff Holgate, Matthew Clark, David Howarth and Andy Palliser) has been quietly working towards obtaining a Club License under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989. This will authorise the club to sell and supply liquor to club members and guests, as well as to members of other clubs with reciprocal visiting rights, and will enable the club to undertake a wider range of social activities. The Christchurch City Council, as lessor of the site, has granted the club permission to apply for the Club License. The Council has also certified that the sale and supply of liquor for consumption at the club meets the requirements of the Christchurch City Plan, the Resource Management Act 1991, and the Building Act 2004. Carol Manihera kindly "volunteered" to be the nominated Club Manager to meet the requirements of the Sale of Liquor Act, and has recently passed the training required to enable her to obtain a Club Manager's Certificate. We now have to compile our application to the Christchurch District Licensing Agency for the Club License, including such aspects as a menu and host responsibility policy, and public notification our application Thanks to the members of the sub-committee, and others who have contributed ideas, and special thanks to Carol GROUNDS AND PROPERTY: Robyn Campbell - Grounds and Property Since my last report we as a city have certainly been challenged to the max, and badly affected by the earthquakes and continuing aftershocks (the number of which is now approaching 8000). Fortunately both our pavilion and our courts have escaped with relatively minor damage. A claim has been made with Jardine Lloyd Thompson Limited, and Ross Clinton (a loss adjuster) met with Lisa and Ben to review damage. We consequently requested, and have received a quote from Centre Court Surfaces for repairs etc. which will now be lodged with Jardine Lloyd Thompson. As a result of the continuity of earthquakes, we have not progressed with renewal/replacement of the existing fencing. Quotes were obtained, but caution has prevailed until "Mother Nature" decides to take a nap! We are thrilled with our new gate and the security of the complex. It is especially pleasing to observe that there has been a decided increase in court fees collected, since access has been limited. After further consultation with Tony Armstrong, the Christchurch City Council arborist, we finally agreed upon a plan for the removal of the pittosporums along the western boundary, and I'm delighted to report that the contract was completed by Tree-Tech on Monday July 04th. Tony Armstrong will now arrange for the Council to lift the canopy of the cedars to the north of the complex, and to plant Hoherias (deciduous tress) in the open spaces. On-going maintenance has been completed voluntarily which is a great financial saving to the Club, however, I would be delighted if we were privileged to have more members attend and assist our very minimal frequency of working bees. Many thanks to those of the membership who continue to support our Club in so many different areas. GRANT APPLICATIONS: Robyn Campbell - Grants The following grants were successfully applied for .... Christchurch City Council - $2,500.00 for our Junior Coaching Programmes Pelorus Trust - $1,000.00 to assist in the purchase of tennis balls New Zealand Post – Postage subsidy. (Thanks Lisa) Our application to the Mainland Foundation was unsuccessful ALMONERS: Robyn Campbell - Almoner This caring outreach section of the Club has been kept busy over the past 12 months, and my thanks go to Andrea Wilson for her input and assistance. SOCIAL and FUNDRAISING: Carol Manihera – Social and Fundraising Following our last AGM, our social and fundraising group have had our wings clipped by factors uncontrollable. Most memorable was our Committee dinner held on Friday 3rd of September. where we had our usual fun time, said our goodbyes, then had our world changed in the early hours of the morning. A Trivial Pursuit night was held in August and was memorable only for it's lack of support from our members. We hosted Kaiapoi Tennis Club, having a team of twelve men and twelve women play for our 'Aftershock' Trophy, which we retained after a visit to Kaiapoi in July 2011. Our annual Strawberries and Champagne Tournament was well attended, and clearly the most popular event on our tennis calendar. The biggest fundraising event, The Seniors Tournament was held on the 26th and 27th of March. Saturday proved to be perfect weather-wise, but Sundays' games were in the balance until nearly noon, when thanks to David Howarth's fine judgment we managed to complete the days play. A special thanks must go to David, who works so hard to make this tournament the success it is, and to Sue Gibson and her merry band of workers in the catering department. Thanks also to all our club members who donated prizes this year, it was a huge help. "The Captains Table" every Saturday after tennis continues to thrive, and the bar takings are a great help to club funds.
