COACHING: Gareth Robb - Head Coach

The 2010/11 season was a very interesting one and unfortunately it was briefly interrupted by the circumstances of the earthquakes.  However, the Burnside Park Tennis Club coaching program was completed in full after a two week break after the February 22nd shake.

The BPTC Junior and Senior teams on average were performing very well up until the disruption.  So moving forward we hope the 2011/12 season will be an enjoyable one without any interruptions and that last season's cancellation of InterClub hasn't dampened the spirits of the young juniors of the Club.

The InterClub team coaching was very close to uninterrupted throughout the season despite the earthquake.   All 30 teams for 2010/11 had their allocated number of coaching sessions, although the InterClub coaching had a couple of weeks off due to the February earthquake but this was quickly made up by adding 2 weeks of coaching on towards the end of term to complete the predetermined 16 weeks of InterClub coaching.  The Club then kindly recognised the cancellation of InterClub and came to the party by generously allocating some funding to give our junior members an extra 2 weeks coaching on top of that.

Canterbury Tennis organised a number of winter league tournaments to help compensate for the loss of the last few weeks of InterClub.  BPTC was extremely generous and offered their courts for a couple of these tournaments and they were well received by the keen tennis players

I would like to thank the InterClub coaching team of Andy Palliser, James Paulik, Annabel Merrett, and Mattias Wieland for their fine efforts in their lessons during the season.  The BPTC continues to lead the way with InterClub coaching where it prefers quality "Assistant Coach" qualified coaches and experience for InterClub coaching.  I would also like to thank the Saturday morning beginner coaches of Richard Hornby, Adam Hornby, David Smith, and Todd Mitchell for their work teaching the beginner members the basics of tennis.

Until the cancellation of senior InterClub our senior teams were sitting high on the Canterbury Tennis InterClub tables.  Our senior women's team lead by Joelene Feneon was able to finish second where they lost the final by a set.  Joelene led from the front winning all 10 of her singles matches.  Joelene also went through winning 9 out of 10 of her doubles matches.  These great results were extremely important getting the senior women's team on the front foot at the start of each fixture.  So many thanks to Joelene and her team for their great efforts last season and her massive contribution to the BPTC senior women's team

Andy Palliser had his Division One men's team sitting clear at the top of the table leading into the semi-finals before the earthquake caused the cancellation of InterClub.  Annabel Merret also in the Division One grade, had her women's team sitting at the top of the table also before the InterClub cancellation.  Mattias Wieland's Division Two team was sitting second on the table but had convincingly beaten the team at the top of the table during the season.  What made this win even better was that it was an under strength team that day due to other commitments and it even had to default one of its singles matches during that fixture.  So this team was sure to be confident leading into the business part of the season.
