Doubles Gradings 2010/2011

Grade 1
Player is new to tennis

Grade 2
Limited playing experience
Working primarily at getting ball over the net and executing a slow rally
Has obvious stroke weaknesses

Grade 3
Balls within reach returned with increasing dependability and more accuate placement
Lacks depth and variety of shot
Lacks some control when trying for power
Seldom double faults and occasionally forces and error on first serve

Grade 4
Dependable strokes on both forehand and backhand within reach
Ability to use a variety of shots including lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys

Grade 5
Good control of forehand and backhand shots on the run
Hits first serve with power and accuracy
Places second serve with judgement
Is able to rush the net on serve with some success
Ability to use power and spin with control
Has sound footwork
Can control depth of shot, and is able to move opponent up and back
Has the agility to retrieve balls from around the court, and make controlled returns

Grade 6
Has good shot anticipation
Frequently has an outstanding shot or exceptional consistency around which a game may be structured
Can regularly hit winners, or force errors, off short balls

Grade 7
Can execute most strokes offensively and defensively
Able to analyse opponent's style
Is actively employing strategy to win points, and has success in its execution

Grade 8
Executes all strokes offensively and defensively
Shots are dependable under pressure
Employs patterns of play to ensure the greatest possibility of winning points
Hits winners or forces errors with both first and second serve

Grade 9
Heading into Representative Championship tennis

A grading marked with a "+" is considered close to the next grade. Players with a "+" grading should only be given games with players of the
same or higher grading number. Whenever possible, players should be placed in a set of players with no more than one number difference.
Under no circumstances should grades be changed by anyone other than the Convenor of the Player Development and Grading Committee.
