Just deuce ....  a word from our President (John Campbell)                 Updated 08/10/2011
Dear Members,

With all that has happened throughout our city over the past year, and in particular the severe damage caused to Wilding Park, it was inevitable that it would have an impact on all Clubs throughout the 2011/12 season.  We have had significant pressure on our courts throughout the past year, and the summer InterClub season is going to cause some minor disruption to our Senior organised play, and also to the capacity of spare courts for members to use at their discretion.

At the request of Canterbury Tennis we have, along with a number of other Clubs, made courts available for the following:

—  All Senior InterClub that was previously played at Wilding Park is now being played on Club courts.  Some of this will overlap with Saturday organised play, and the remainder will be on Sundays.  This will mean a slight reduction some weeks in the number of courts available for organised play, and certainly a reduction in spare courts on Sundays for members to have for casual use.  In addition, our Junior Challenger grades will also be playing on club courts on Sundays.

—  Events such as the Canterbury Tennis Junior Spring Open, and Coaching Camps will be hosted by us, along with Avonhead and Cashmere.  These events are being run during the school holidays (Sunday 9 October to Wednesday 19 October, excluding Saturday).  All 6 hardcourts will be used for these events, which will reduce Tuesday and Thursday mornings organised play to the four astrocourts.  All courts will be used on the Sunday 9th and Monday 10th, plus the afternoon of Tuesdsay 11th of October.

The Management Committee want you to know that these decisions have been carefully considered, and given the fortunate position our Club is in with no significant court damage, we feel that it is the right thing to do to make sure our courts are fully utilised for all members of the tennis community.  We hope you are all understanding of this, and over the next few months continue to show the tolerance we have all shown so far.  We will endeavour to keep you informed of any changes, and any events that will be run from our Club.  We are also working on a booking system so that members will be able to book courts when they are available.

Thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.

John Campbell

To Junior Members of Burnside Park Tennis Club

Welcome to the 2011/2012 season and we are looking forward to seeing you all back again this year – and to what will hopefully be an uninterrupted season!

Opening Day
Saturday September 3rd   —   see details below.

New Season's Registration
Attached is the registration form for this season. Very little has changed from last season, and that includes the subscription fees.  One change that you may have noticed if you have been at the Club recently is that we now have KeyCard access through the front gate.  For many of you this won’t be an issue, however, if you wish to access the courts outside of organised play or coaching times you will need to purchase a KeyCard.   These cost $16.00, $11.00 of which is refundable when you return the card.

Hopefully all the information you need is in the registration form, however, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to call the Club (messages will be checked regularly), or you can e-Mail Lisa at junad@burnsideparktennis.com or Gareth on coach@burnsideparktennis.com

InterClub Season
You will see from the dates that the InterClub season starts and finishes a little later for the first half of the season.  This is obviously due to the changes in the school terms.  Unfortunately this hasn’t meant that time frame for registering teams has been made any later.  Due to the extra time needed this year to find courts for everyone to play on, Canterbury Tennis needs our preliminary numbers by the end of August, and we will be finalising our teams mid September, so we would really appreciate it if anyone that wants to play this season registers as soon as possible.  (We had a great response to our earlier email requesting interest for this season – thank you).

Regards

Lisa and Gareth

Coaching stuff ....  a word from our Head Coach (Gareth Robb)

The 2010/11 season was a very interesting one and unfortunately it was briefly interrupted by the circumstances of the earthquakes.  However, the Burnside Park Tennis Club coaching program was completed in full after a two week break after the February 22nd shake.

The BPTC Junior and Senior teams on average were performing very well up until the disruption.  So moving forward we hope the 2011/12 season will be an enjoyable one without any interruptions and that last season's cancellation of InterClub hasn't dampened the spirits of the young juniors of the Club.

The InterClub team coaching was very close to uninterrupted throughout the season despite the earthquake.   All 30 teams for 2010/11 had their allocated number of coaching sessions, although the InterClub coaching had a couple of weeks off due to the February earthquake but this was quickly made up by adding 2 weeks of coaching on towards the end of term to complete the predetermined 16 weeks of InterClub coaching.  The Club then kindly recognised the cancellation of InterClub and came to the party by generously allocating some funding to give our junior members an extra 2 weeks coaching on top of that.

Canterbury Tennis organised a number of winter league tournaments to help compensate for the loss of the last few weeks of InterClub.  BPTC was extremely generous and offered their courts for a couple of these tournaments and they were well received by the keen tennis players

I would like to thank the InterClub coaching team of Andy Palliser, James Paulik, Annabel Merrett, and Mattias Wieland for their fine efforts in their lessons during the season.  The BPTC continues to lead the way with InterClub coaching where it prefers quality "Assistant Coach" qualified coaches and experience for InterClub coaching.  I would also like to thank the Saturday morning beginner coaches of Richard Hornby, Adam Hornby, David Smith, and Todd Mitchell for their work teaching the beginner members the basics of tennis.

Until the cancellation of senior InterClub our senior teams were sitting high on the Canterbury Tennis InterClub tables.  Our senior women's team lead by Joelene Feneon was able to finish second where they lost the final by a set.  Joelene led from the front winning all 10 of her singles matches.  Joelene also went through winning 9 out of 10 of her doubles matches.  These great results were extremely important getting the senior women's team on the front foot at the start of each fixture.  So many thanks to Joelene and her team for their great efforts last season and her massive contribution to the BPTC senior women's team

Andy Palliser had his Division One men's team sitting clear at the top of the table leading into the semi-finals before the earthquake caused the cancellation of InterClub.  Annabel Merret also in the Division One grade, had her women's team sitting at the top of the table also before the InterClub cancellation.  Mattias Wieland's Division Two team was sitting second on the table but had convincingly beaten the team at the top of the table during the season.  What made this win even better was that it was an under strength team that day due to other commitments and it even had to default one of its singles matches during that fixture.  So this team was sure to be confident leading into the business part of the season.

Cheers, Gareth
BPTC installs new "CardKey" security locking system

Why did the Club have to install new security locks ?
The Club has just installed a new security locking system which is based on the use of "CardKeys" (a magnetically encoded key-tag).  These are not mandatory for Club Members who play during organised time-slots, but will be required for those of you who choose to access the Club's facilities at other times.

The "CardKeys" are available form the office for an initial charge of $16.00 ($11.00 of this is refundable when you return the card).  An annual re-coding charge of $5.00 is also applicable for card-holders who wish to retain their card and continue to have 24/7 access to the Club's premises.

It is extremely important that you do not lose your card  —  a replacement will cost $27.00.  Loss of cards will compromise our perimeter security, and this is a great incentive not to lose cards !!
Burnside Park Tennis Club was formerly the only local tennis Club with unsecured facilities, and a decision was taken at the 2010 AGM to introduce formal security at the Club.  The Management Committee implemented a new system utilising a digital combination lock on the main gate shortly thereafter.  The new system has been well-received by Members, and has seen a significant increase in the court-fees the Club is collecting from non-members who come and play on our courts.

It is the Committee's view that visitors who are non-members should have to pay court-fees when they come to play, after all our members are paying for that privilege by paying their subscriptions.  Far too many players expect to come and play at our Club for nothing, and many will take irresponsible and dishonest steps to avoid paying anything.  We dont think that's fair on our members !!

Line calls:   LTA guidance  —  was it in or out?

So was the ball in or was it out?

To get the definitive explanation of this rule the LTA have provided the following insight:

The rule states if "any part of the ball touches the line, the ball is in".

Calls are made more complicated as the ball "squashes a little on impact".  In fact, the ball squashes a lot on impact, especially on serves and smashes.  You may have noticed on Hawkeye replays at Wimbledon that the marks the ball leaves vary in shape and size.  For example, if it is a lob, the mark the ball leaves is likely to be almost spherical.  If it is a smash, the ball is likely to leave a long, narrower mark.

So to the left is a graphic to help us.  Example 3 may come as a surprise .....!

THE CALLS:

1. Both the overhead and along-the-line view show the ball touching the line on impact.  Ball is IN

2. The overhead view shows the ball touching the line on impact, but this is not conclusive. The along-the-line view shows that the ball squashed on impact and did touch the line.  Ball is IN

3. The overhead view shows the ball touching the line on impact, but this is not conclusive. The along-the-line view shows that although the ball overshadowed the line, it did not touch the line.  Ball is OUT

4. Both the overhead and along-the-line view show that the ball did not touch the line.  Ball is OUT
